What is Lite N Easy like?

So, we've been on Lite N Easy for nearly two weeks now.

So far I have to say that it has been AWESOME.  Well worth the money.  We have both lost a small amount of weight and I'm feeling confident that it'll continue.

For me, the problem has always been that once I start eating healthily, I also start OBSESSING about the food I can't eat.  Generally speaking I last about four days before I buckle and eat something so ridiculously off-plan that I can't even count high enough to calculate the calories.  And you know, once I've done that I may as well forget the healthy food for the rest of the week.  Hopeless.

The first thing that's been a breakthrough for me (and you would have seen me go on about this repeatedly if you follow me on Instagram) is that it just doesn't feel like diet food.  The food is in fact excellent.  I've had spaghetti bolognese and crumbed chicken and butter chicken, bacon and eggs, pikelets, muffins and cookies.  It doesn't feel like diet food so I'm not obsessing about all the things I can't eat.

However if we want to go out for a meal, or have a treat, there's no reason why we can't do that.  As long as it's only once a week or less it's not going to break the diet.  We used to have a routine that I loved where we'd go out for a scrumptious leisurely breakfast on the weekends.  We'd go to Trigg (God I love that place - if you live in Perth you MUST GO THERE), or Hillarys or, if we were feeling a bit scruffy we'd go to Malaga.

I thought I'd miss that whole routine terribly on Lite N Easy but there's always a couple of hot breakfasts so we save them for the weekend and now we still have our hot breakfast but we can be in our pyjamas and it doesn't cost $60 a pop!

On the same note, because all our food is provided the temptation to eat the wrong thing has all but disappeared.  I barely think about food at all.  I know what I'm having for breakfast, lunch and dinner and it doesn't occur to me to eat anything else.  I was a little hungry to begin with because Blair and I had got used to giving ourselves such obscene portions, but now I find that dinner is almost too much and the rest of the time there's plenty of food to fill me up.

And speaking of portion sizes, what a lesson in portion control.  Even when I thought I was giving myself a modest serve, it was about double what Lite N Easy provides.  For example, in the mornings I now eat my muesli out of a tea cup.  It fits easily.  Needless to say, before Lite N Easy even when I was actually eating something healthy I was eating loads too much of it.

On the downside, we're not loving the fruit.  I happen not to like mandarins, oranges or kiwi fruit and jeepers are there a lot of those.  I do like apples even though I probably haven't eaten an apple since school so it's nice to get back in the habit of eating the occasional piece of fruit.

Look at those bloody pikelets.  Heaven I tell you

We've got about four and a half months till the wedding.  I don't know if we'll stick with the Lite N Easy all the way until then - I do think I will get tired of frozen dinners eventually - but it's so damn convenient and tasty the idea of making food has become way too overwhelming.  I would have to assemble food?  And cook it in a vessel other than the microwave?  And think of the dishes.

So far, Lite N Easy is a very comfortable and easy fit for us.

And soon I will be able to say the same about my pants.

I'm linking up with Jess for IBOT!

  1. Sounds like it's a brilliant start! Shame they don't do it here in the NT, but I have to say I found the cost quite prohibitive anyway. But that's looking at it from a budgetary perspective - my waistline would sign up in a nano-second! LOL
Do you find that you still have to do food shopping to supplement the food, or you just have to worry about all the other things when you do grocery shopping, now?
Hope everything continues to go well!!

    1. Hi Kel,
For us we found that we're actually saving money (or at least breaking even with our food expenses before). I calculated that with eating out a couple of nights a week, plus cafe breakfasts on the weekend, plus Blair buying his lunch at work each day, plus the groceries I was buying, we were spending upwards of $400 per week just on food! Lite N Easy for the both of us is $280 a week so we're saving a lot of money on it.

I haven't bought any other food the whole time we've been on it. They provide everything - even down to tiny pats of butter and little packets of Vegemite or jam for your toast. The only thing we have to provide is milk. It makes it so easy.

  2. I have often wondered about Lite an Easy. It is great that you are learning about portion sizes, we really do eat too much these days. Good luck with the wedding planning.

    1. I was always aware that portion sizes in restaurants were massive but I thought I was pretty conservative at home. Even if that's all we take away from the experience, it was a lesson we needed!

  3. I have quite a few mates who swear by it. I think it's great as it simplifies your eating - NO choice but to follow their plan. Hope it works for you. I think I could do with this over the comfort eating weather of winter!

    1. The simplicity has certainly worked for me. Plus I still get to eat my favourite foods like pasta! Just a lot less of it :/

  5. I think when our kids leave home we will probably do the Lite and Easy thing. A girl at work was doing it and always had the most amazing lunches - made everybody jealous!

  6. I am really happy to hear this. Dave and I have been talking about me maybe doing Lite n Easy once this bub has come along, to make it a little easier for me to eat healthy without having to try when I have a toddler and newborn to look after and Dave is back at work and not home as often. I am now seriously thinking this might be a really good option for me. Thanks!

  8. I think it would make a great start when you are looking at losing weight. Ease your way in to cooking better and the amount to feed yourself. I don't eat a lot of fruit either - rather a carrot actually. good luck and I love Trigg when we head to Perth - nothing like over looking the ocean having a coffee.

  9. I love that you go to Malaga if you are feeling scruffy!! Hilarious!!
I often think about how easy it would be to do lite n easy, although now I would still have to cook a kids meal as well! Great review!!

  12. Great to hear you are enjoying it. Just found you through Aussie Blogs to love facebook page - I write a lot about real food and nutrition - although not your typical eat your greens and wholegrains kind of nutrition. Often correcting issues with your metabolism/ thyroid help to fix the problem of any extra weight.

pop over if you ever feel like exploring a different path :)

    1. Thanks for the info Natalie. I'm not actually overweight, just trying to slim down before I become overweight, if that makes sense. I've always had a relatively fast metabolism but it's slowing down as I get older DAMMIT.

I had a look at your blog, it's beautiful. And I'm now your newest follower!

  13. I have a friend who's doing L&E too, and she swears by it. Our portion sizes are way too big, I blame my big plates, so now use a bread and butter plate for mine. :)
